Buffalo News: Brittany Jones Sworn in to Village of Kenmore Board

In a May 26 article, the Buffalo News reported on the diversification of governing boards in Buffalo suburbs in an article titled “Governing Boards in Buffalo’s Suburbs are Historically White. Change Has Come – in Kenmore.”

Stephen T. Watson, of the Buffalo News, reports: “The Village of Kenmore was incorporated in 1899 as Buffalo’s first streetcar suburb. In its 125 years, village officials believe, every person who served as mayor or as a village trustee was white. That changed May 7, when Brittany Jones, who is Black, was sworn in to fill a vacancy on the Village Board … Jones is one member of one village board, but her appointment, observers said, offers the promise that officeholders in Buffalo’s suburbs will better reflect the diversity found in these communities … Jones, 34, serves as principal law clerk to Justice E. Jeannette Ogden of the State Appellate Division’s Fourth Department. Ogden swore in Jones at a May 7 board meeting.”

We are proud to have both Brittany Jones and Judge Ogden as members of the MBAWNY.

“There are people who look like me that live in various parts of the city and in various parts of the greater Buffalo community,” she said. “And so it’s important that leadership in all of those villages and in all of those different communities – whether they are in Buffalo or in the greater Buffalo community – have representation,” says Jones in the Buffalo News article.

Justice E. Jeannette Ogden of the State Appellate Division’s Fourth Department swore in Jones at a May 7 Village of Kenmore board meeting.
